Kenya: FC Talanta shows up but Gor spanks them to end the season in style

Nairobi – After boycotting last weekend’s Premier League title duel FKF in pursuit of Kakamega Homeboyz, FC Talanta showed up on Wednesday only to be slapped 2-1 by season-ending Gor Mahia in beauty.

The game was postponed after Gor refused to travel to Kakamega last month where Talanta won the game, citing the inability to secure a venue for their home game in Nairobi.

And Talanta showed up, having handed the title to Homeboyz three free points on Sunday when they refused to show up for their home game at the Ruaraka complex with players allegedly on strike over non-payment of wages and bonuses .

Peter Lwasa netted a brace, netting one in each half to hand Gor a comfortable win in their final game of the season.

After a period of K’Ogalo dominance, Lwasa broke the deadlock two minutes from the break by simply tapping the ball into an empty net off a well-weighted reduction from George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo.

The latter had been sent on the left with a delicious defensive pass from Victor Ochieng, Odhiambo taking care of cutting in a low cross.

Before that, Gor had chances to score. In the seventh minute, Benson Omalla had a wonderful chance when Odhiambo’s cross from the left found him unmarked but his flying header went wide.

Two minutes later, Lwasa had a chance turning well inside the box, but his weaker left-footed shot hit the side netting.

In the 13th minute, Gor went close again, this time Dennis Ng’ang’a’s well-curled free kick from 30 yards out was cleared by Talanta goalkeeper Isaiah Wakasala.

Talanta had been forced to play on the back foot for most of the match but they sniffed a chance when Vincent Owino found space from distance but his shot was denied by Gor keeper Dolph Owino.

Gor managed to keep up late pressure from Talanta and escaped with a 1-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, Talanta came back stronger and had chances, but were too casual in attack.

In the 58th minute, a well-weighted cross from Alvin Ochieng on the right found Francis Kahiro’s run to the edge of the penalty area but it was dummed to Michael Jairo. However, the forward opted to switch to Mathew Angel who couldn’t pull the trigger.

They were punished immediately for the lost chance on a counter.

Goalkeeper Owino ran off his line to clear the ball, the shot falling on Lwasa who swung away from his marker before going past the keeper and shooting low into the net.

Talanta managed to pick up the pace in attack, but their poor decision-making at the most important moment let them down.

They were almost caught by a quick counter but Omalla’s shot after being passed on the left by Ernest Wendo was a few centimeters wide.

With five minutes left however, Talanta collected one from a free-kick after substitute Angel curled the ball over the wall and into the top left corner.

Gor Mahia ends the season with 52 points, but his final ranking will be known on Sunday when the rest of the teams play their last games of the season.
